Eighteen games into the season, Frank Lampard’s side is currently 10 points clear of second-place Middlesbrough and 12 points clear of third-place Millwall. They have won 11 of their last 12 games and scored six goals or more in half of them.Their goal difference (+32) is almost thrice as much as the next-best in the league (Stoke City with +12) and are joint-second in goals conceded (18). They could also soon have as many as four goal-scorers in the double digits this season.That means this season is a battle for second place, and it’s not pretty. Boro recently drew agaisnt Oxford United, Millwall have a negative goal differential, Stoke have lost three of their last five and Preston have been wildly inconsistent since the international break.Making up for the lack of strength in the league is a high degree of drama. Five points separate fifth from seventh (Hull City at 28). And there’s still a lot of jockeying going on week-to-week. That makes results like West Brom’s come-from-behind win against Swansea all the more important. A loss would’ve put them four points above the drop, but they’re instead four points out of the playoffs.Meanwhile, all three sides that got relegated from the Premier League last week are still struggling.
