Saints sign a couple of familiar faces to their 53-man roster

We saw the New Orleans Saints open two spots on their 53-man roster during Tuesday’s roster moves, and on Wednesday we learned what the plan is for those vacancies. Two players were promoted from the practice squad in wide receiver Dante Pettis and offensive lineman William Sherman. Pettis had run out of game-day elevations, and Sherman only had one left. So the Saints decided to promote both of them now to keep playing those guys on Sundays. It makes sense. Pettis has been a go-to returns specialist since the Saints traded Rashid Shaheed in early November. The offensive line has been badly banged up and they like Sherman as one of six or seven active linemen on game days. He has experience at both guard spots and even practiced at center during the preseason. So now they’re back at capacity, at least on the 53-man roster. There are still two spots open on the practice squad now, but we’re expecting the players waived to make room for Pettis and Sherman to take them — wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. and right tackle Barry Wesley, who recently returned from injured reserve. Austin has spent most of the season on the practice squad anyway, so think of these as procedural moves more than anything else. Assuming everyone clears waivers. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: Saints roster moves: Dante Pettis, William Sherman join 53-man roster
