Michigan Football fires special teams coordinator J.B. Brown

The Michigan Wolverines have fired special teams coordinator J.B. Brown after two years on the job, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.Source: Michigan has dismissed special teams coach JB Brown. He’d been Michigan’s special teams coach the past two seasons and has been at the school for five total years in various roles.— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) December 3, 2025Michigan ranked No. 117 in special teams efficiency this season, per ESPN’s FPI. Michigan’s kick and punt return prowess was lackluster, with Semaj Morgan highly inefficient as well as turnover prone as the punt returner. Michigan kicker Dominic Zvada regressed in ‘25, making just 68.2% of his field goals (15-of-22), and punter Hudson Hollenbeck was also inconsistent with no greater example being an 11-yard shank against Ohio State. Brown was a special teams analyst for Michigan from 2021-23, and Michigan decided to promote him for the sake of continuity after former special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh left for the same position with the Seattle Seahawks. Firing Brown was a necessary move. Football is a three phase game, and the team had little to no production on special teams in 2025.
