Matt LaFleur says Packers play in the cold, so they will practice in the cold

GREEN BAY – Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur has no intention of taking his players inside to practice despite 8-degree temperatures Dec. 4.The Packers play at Lambeau Field on Dec. 7 against the Chicago Bears and the high temperature is expected to be in the teens. With the game at 3:25 p.m., it’s likely it will be a lot colder than that before it’s finished.“Is it cold?” LaFleur said when asked about the expected game-day temperature.LaFleur said his experience is that practicing in the cold prepares you for the cold on game day. Former coach Mike Holmgren liked to practice indoors because he thought it helped the players concentrate on their assignments better, but just about every Packers coach since has embraced practicing in the cold.“I think it’s critical,” LaFleur said. “I mean, our ability to get outside, get on the grass, I think that’s crucial. I think it’s more of an advantage when the other team can’t practice in it. So, it’s kind of like it’s negligible this week. It doesn’t really matter because Chicago is in the same environment.“But I do think it’s critical, just in terms of everything feels a little bit different. So, you’ve got to get used to that.”When the Packers lost to the Bears 24-22 in Week 17 last year, it was 16 degrees with a wind chill of 2 degrees. The game came down to field goals in the final minute, and the Bears’ Carlos Santos hit the game-winner with no time left.“You can never take it for granted, that’s for sure,” LaFleur said. “And you’ve got to in the most critical moments – you’ve got to be at your best. And unfortunately, a year ago, myself, we weren’t at our best.”Here are some other topics LaFleur addressed in his Dec. 4 pre-practice news conference:Sean Rhyan is growing into his new position nicelySean Rhyan was moved from guard to center when Elgton Jenkins was lost to a season-ending ankle injury and went from part-time starter to full-time center. He has started three games since Jenkins went down.“I just see his comfort level growing and growing and growing,” LaFleur said. “I think he’s done a good job on command. We cleaned up some things. It’s never going to be perfect. Never is for any player, but I do see the growth and development that we are hoping to see, and I think that will continue to grow the more he gets in there.”LaFleur lauds Jordan Love for his Walter Payton Man of the Year nominationIt was no surprise to LaFleur that quarterback Jordan Love was the Packers’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. He said he’s seen Love grow as much as a person as he has as a player.“First of all, I think he’s a tremendous human being,” LaFleur said. “He was definitely raised the right way, and he’s got a great support system with his family. But I also think just to watch his development, from a young guy coming in here to the man he is today, it’s just really cool to be a part of that journey.“And to watch him grow, and for him to embrace what it means to be the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, and what he does for the community, and how he helps a lot of kids and just people in the community in general. It’s been really cool to watch.”New acquisition Jordon Riley arrivesThe Packers signed 6-foot-5, 338-pound nose tackle Jordon Riley off the New York Giants’ practice squad Dec. 3 and started immediately to get him acquainted with their defensive scheme so he can play as soon as possible.“I met him yesterday,” LaFleur said. “He is a big man. That was evident. He’s got a good energy about himself. Just my interactions with him, I thought he went out there and did a pretty good job yesterday.“Obviously, he’s had some years of experience (21 games) under his belt, so I think the learning curve will be a little bit quicker for him. But I know he’s meeting extra with our D-line coaches, and hopefully we can get him to speed in case we need him.”This article originally appeared on Packers News: Packers play in cold, so they will practice in cold, Matt LaFleur says
