Dan Lanning breaks down desired traits in offensive coordinator hire

This is not going to be the last time Oregon Ducks head football coach Dan Lanning is going to have to do this.Lanning is searching for his third offensive coordinator, as Will Stein has accepted the Kentucky Wildcats’ job. Former OC Kenny Dillingham and Stein have been resounding successes in Eugene, and now Lanning has an even better idea of who he wants in that position. That’s something that he’s learned during his time working with top coaches while in Eugene — the desirable traits in future hires.”You realize what traits are maybe more important than others, and I’ve been really blessed to have unbelievable coaches here, but the most important traits aren’t always the most important traits that other people think,” Lanning said. “To me, it’s about the ability to be humble, the ability to work with others and share a creative space, to realize it’s not just yours, it’s others. A lot of people are involved in having success on offense and defense. We’ve been really fortunate to have coaches that realize that, to recognize that it’s not their call, that it’s the player that’s really the secret, is having great players and having guys that can execute at a high level, that accountability is necessary, and then being humble enough to realize when you make mistakes, so you don’t make the same mistake again.”Being humble is one thing, but it’s also getting down to brass tacks and knowing football and even more importantly, pushing that knowledge down to the players.”I think a lot of those things don’t necessarily exist in the game, and all those traits are way more important to me than how much football you know, what you can draw up on a dry-erase board, like none of that matters if you can’t teach a player to do it and they don’t know that they love you and you care about them,” Lanning said. “You know, like all those things are way more important to me than a lot of the things that I think people evaluate when they’re going through that process.”Lanning has been two-for-two in that process, and there’s no reason he won’t go three-for-three.Contact/Follow @Ducks_Wire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oregon Ducks news, notes, and opinions. This article originally appeared on Ducks Wire: Lanning breaks down traits for future offensive coordinator
