Coyotes demolish Mercer on the road, advance to FCS quarterfinals

Dec. 6—MACON, Ga. — The No. 11-seeded University of South Dakota football team stormed into the Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals with a 47-0 dismantling of No. 6 Mercer on the road in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday afternoon.The Coyotes overwhelmed the Bears in every phase of the game, silencing Five Star Stadium behind a blistering offensive barrage and a defense that turned the nation’s top freshman, quarterback Braden Atkinson, into a nonfactor.From the opening series, USD’s front seven on defense collapsed the pocket to make Atkinson uncomfortable, thrived on his four-interception day, and the offense capitalized on each opportunity to build a lead Mercer never threatened.By halftime, South Dakota imposed its will with a 24-0 lead, setting the tone for a runaway second-round performance. For the third consecutive season, the Coyotes (10-4) are headed to the quarterfinal round and will face the winner of No. 3 Montana/No. 14 South Dakota State next weekend.All told, South Dakota’s offense posted 550 total yards on 57 plays, with 20 first downs and had scored on four of the first five drives to open the game, three were touchdowns.The Coyotes limited the No. 1 total yardage offense in the FCS to a mere 120 total yards at the half with three punts, and only 37 passing yards from Atkinson on 3 of 13 passing and three first-half interceptions.Gabriel Hardman and RJ Stewart each had one interception, as Mikey Munn hauled in one in the first half and another in the second for USD’s defense. Atkinson had seven total interceptions through 10 games this season before Saturday’s contest.By the 9-minute mark in the second quarter, South Dakota’s star running back L.J. Phillips Jr. had 100 rushing yards on 10 carries and a score. Phillips finished the day with 160 yards on 16 carries and two rushing touchdowns.Reid Watkins sparked the scoring on the ground with an 8-yarder to open the game, his first collegiate career score, as Tennel Bryant also earned his first touchdown with the Coyotes on a 26-yard rush in the fourth quarter. Carson Fletcher posted his second career 100-yard rushing game with 107 yards on 13 carries. On the day, the Coyotes had 309 total rushing yards and four scores on the ground, taking apart a Bears (9-3) defense that had previously limited their opponents to 92 rushing yards per game.Through the air, quarterback Aidan Bouman surpassed 131 yards in less than one minute of second-half action, delivering a beauty down the sideline to Larenzo Fenner for a 66-yard touchdown pass. The play tagged Fenner as the new single-season receiving touchdown leader all-time in program history, scoring his 15th reception of the season. Fenner finished the day with 100 yards and four receptions.Bouman became the all-time career passing leader in program history and now has 9,047 passing yards in his four-year career at USD after tossing two touchdown passes for 241 yards (13 of 18) on Saturday. He has now become the first Coyote with 9,000-plus career passing yards.Tysen Boze had a career-high 108 yards on two receptions and a 63-yard score, his first collegiate touchdown of his career, as Jack Martens posted 29 receiving yards on three catches.Defensively, Roman Tillmon led the way with six total tackles and three solo. Nate Ewell had five total tackles, while Gabriel Hardman tallied five total tackles, three solo and one interception in the first quarter. RJ Stewart was all over the place with three solo tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception in the second quarter.Lincoln Adams and Carter Hooper each posted a tackle for loss in the final minutes to cap off the dominating victory on the road.Saturday’s win marked South Dakota head coach Travis Johansen’s 10th victory of the season, setting the record for most wins by a first-year head coach in USD history.
