EMPORIA (KSNT)- Conference home opener win for the Hornets.The Emporia State women’s basketball team (5-3, 1-1 MIAA) took down Missouri Western 69-59 to earn its first MIAA win of the season. It was close early on but the Hornets outscored the Griffons 21-7 in the second quarter to lead by 15 at the break. The Hornets led by as many as 18 but Missouri Western battled back and the cut the deficit to six late in the fourth quarter. Emporia native and senior guard Gracie Gilpin hit a dagger three to put the game beyond reach as the Hornets earned its first conference win. Senior forward Macey Gandee led the way offensively for ESU with 20 points to go along with six rebounds.Kaitlyn Sanders had 12 and Katiya Casey scored 11.“After our last game we knew we had to show up tonight and get the win,” senior forward Macey Gandee said.The Hornets shot 35.6 percent from the floor but shot only 4-19 from beyond the arc despite the win. Emporia State will have an eight day break before playing Lincoln at home on Dec. 14.For more sports news, click here.
