The Cleveland Browns are not a good football team.At 3-10 and already eliminated from playoff contention before you’ve wrapped your first present of the holiday year, this is an objective truth. The Browns are a franchise that has sputtered, flipped, flopped, and thrown up on itself more than maybe any other in North American sports in the 21st century.They will all but assuredly be picking in the top five of the NFL draft again, even with their star player, Myles Garrett, en route to smashing the all-time single-season sack record.Everything from now to the NFL Draft in April will be abuzz about quarterback prospects, blue chippers, risers at the combine, and the Browns needing a savior.Go and use trade capital for Fernando Mendoza at the No. 1 spot.Go and take a chance on LaNorris Sellers if he elects to enter the draft; the physical tools are all there.I’m here to tell the Browns organization one thing: No.Please don’t do it. Don’t draft a quarterback. Don’t look at a quarterback. Don’t use either of your first-round picks on a quarterback. If any of the draft-eligible quarterbacks come to you for an interview, tell them that no one is home.I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Shedeur Sanders is the savior or even an average quarterback. He threw for over 300 yards on Sunday in a loss to the Tennessee Titans, but to anoint him a star would be as foolish as calling him a bust after he looked terrible in his first game against the Ravens.What I’m telling Cleveland is that the house of cards they’ve built is on a foundation of jelly, toothpicks, and flimsy paper. They have an excellent defense, with arguably one of the greatest players on that side of the ball in football history, but their offense is more akin to a junior varsity squad than to a professional team.Mendoza won’t change the culture or fix the Browns. Sellers isn’t going to come in and save anyone. Dante Moore, Ty Simpson, and Diego Pavia, no matter what prospect you bring in with a 3-minute-long highlight package on YouTube from their 2025 season, aren’t doing anything until the Browns actually build a solid base.Browns fans will probably jeer and call it ‘boring’, but they need to use their picks in the 2025 draft to help Sanders (or a future franchise quarterback) actually succeed in Cleveland. Go out and get some big bodies for the line that can give the quarterback time. If you want to be exciting, go and take a Makai Lemon or Carnell Tate to bring in a game-changing skill player, along with help in the trenches.Sanders deserves a full season playing at the starter position. If he fails even with a better foundation, then in 2027, when the quarterback class is expected to be deeper with the likes of Julian Sayin and Arch Manning, that’s when you pull the trigger.Dumping Sanders now and rolling the dice again would be no different than when the Cardinals instantly threw away their first-round pick of Josh Rosen and then picked Kyler Murray No. 1 overall the following year. Sure, it was exciting and brought lofty expectations to the desert, but how did that turn out?0 playoff wins in seven seasons.Sanders has the skill set to be something in the NFL. That something might be a franchise quarterback, but it’s equally likely that he’s a solid career backup who becomes a journeyman in a few years. The only way the Browns will know for sure is if they give him more than a toothpick for a sword and an airplane pillow as a shield.Don’t take a quarterback in the first round, Browns. If you do, it’ll more than likely end the same way come next year.
