Best and worst case scenarios for Notre Dame on Championship Saturday Notre Dame is now is an odd position, as it looks like they’ll need a little help to make sure they’ll make it into the 12-team College Football Playoff. At 10-2, the Irish have one of the best records in the game, but its early losses have put some doubt into their CFP chances. There is still plenty of hope, and help that could happen this weekend as multiple teams battle it out for conference championships. Let’s take a look at what needs to happen for Notre Dame to feel comfortably in the field and for them to be sweating the outcome on Sunday. Best – Georgia blows out Alabama This would be one of the best scenarios for Notre Dame, as the Crimson Tide jumped them in this past weekends rankings. Many questioned why it happened, and it’s pretty clear that the Irish are rooting for the Bulldogs to get a sizable win over Alabama. A third loss would be hard for the committee to justify putting them in over the Irish, even if it did happen in a conference championship game.Worst – Alabama beats Georgia This wouldn’t be the outcome that Notre Dame would like to see, as it would give the Tide the SEC’s automatic bid, and force Georgia down a few spots, but still within range to be inside the top-12. You have to expect that Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma are also in the field, giving a team like the Irish a much more difficult chance to get an at-large bid. Best – Texas Tech defeats BYUThis might be the best and easiest path for Notre Dame, as BYU most likely would fall out of contention, solidifying as spot for the Blue and Gold. You can make arguments about the fact that they are playing in a conference title game if the Cougars lose, but they’ll also have a second-loss, and some losing recency-bias. Worst – BYU knocks off Texas Tech It’s not easy beating the same team twice in a season, and that could happen here. The Red Raiders looked like the much better team earlier in the fall, and have started to peak. The Cougars haven’t played their best football, but they haven’t been knocked off either. A BYU win ensures they’ll take the automatic bid, and pushes Texas Tech to an at-large, which they’d most likely get over Notre Dame. This might be the absolute worst case scenario for the Irish. Who cares – Big Ten and ACCHonestly, what happens in both of these games really doesn’t matter for Notre Dame. Both Ohio State and Indiana are in, it’s just where they are landing in the seeding process. The ACC won’t send its best out this weekend, as Duke will take on Virginia. Multiple other teams could be on the outside looking in, as one of these two average teams will be in.Friday night help from Boise StateYou can check another box off the Notre Dame resume, as they now have defeated a conference champion thanks to Boise State beating UNLV to win the Mountain West on Friday night. It’s a data-point that some others won’t have, and could push the Irish into one of the final spots. At this point, anything that helps Notre Dame is more than welcome, and Boise State donated to the cause.
