Boston College Men’s Basketball Comes from Behind, Defeats New Haven 67-63

On Saturday afternoon, Boston College escaped with a 67-63 over New Haven. After controlling the tip, Boston College proceeded to turn the ball over without getting a shot. The new starting lineup looked a little choppy on the offensive end, without scoring a bucket until the 16:50 mark via a Toews triple. He followed up the trey with his patented midrange pull-up, but despite his five early points BC continued to look out of sorts. Toews committed three straight turnovers, while Hand’s struggles continued with two missed 3s. Despite four early offensive rebounds, BC started the game shooting 3-11 from the floor and dug themselves an early 10-point hole by the 11:21 mark, forcing a BC timeout. Over the next two minutes, BC found some sparks off their bench. Asemota checked in and drilled an elbow 3. On the next possession, Hastings made a great recovery to absolutely erase a New Haven layup attempt and allowed Forte to get an easy transition layup. By the 7:54 mark, BC was starting to turn New Haven over and had cut the deficit to five. The lead would remain two possessions for the next several minutes over the course of some choppy basketball on both ends, before New Haven was able to hit a couple 3s and restore a double-digit lead with 2:53 to play in the half. By halftime, the Eagles were down 10 having shot 7-25 from the floor and 3-13 from downtown.BC opened the second half with five straight points from Fred Payne to cut the deficit to five. Another Luka trey brought the Eagles within one, but two New Haven free throws restored a three-point Chargers lead by the first media timeout of the second half. Fred Payne then caught fire with five more points to tie the game at 37. Both teams continued to trade buckets – Payne hit another jumper – with both sides struggling to pull away.  The Eagles took their first lead of the game on Donald Hand Jr.’s first points of the day as he connected on a triple with 7:58 to play. Less than two minutes later, BC continued to capitalize on a New Haven scoring drought as Asemota drilled another 3. With six minutes to play, BC led by one. Another Hand trey gave the Eagles some cushion – they took a six-point lead into the final media timeout. New Haven whittled away down the stretch, drilling a corner three to cut the lead to three before connecting on a transition lay to cut it to one. A pair of Hastings free throws brought the lead back to three with 1:47 to play. Two more free throws once again brought it to one, before Hand responded with a fadeaway in the midrange. The Eagles finally closed the game out with a free throw and Boston College closed out a 67-63.
