Charlie Berens: If ‘Da Bears’ have the pope, guess who Packers have?

Holy moly, it’s Packers-Bears week, and you know what that means? A lot of joking around. You might say Charlie Berens has taken the rivalry talk up a notch ahead of the Dec. 7 game at Lambeau Field, as in all the way to the heavens.During an appearance on NFL Media’s “Good Morning Football: Overtime” on Dec. 1, Wisconsin’s comedic ambassador talked with the hosts about how he expects the Green Bay Packers to run the table during the remainder of the season and go to the Super Bowl. That quickly took the conversation to “the situation” with the Chicago Bears, who are atop the NFC North with a 9-3 record. The Packers are right behind at 8-3-1.“It is a situation, and we’re all surprised. Shocked, if you will,” Berens said. He has a theory on how they got there.“OK, so you need the pope to be a Bears fan and that’s how this happened, and you can see the pope wasn’t really praying necessarily for the Bears and then after the first two weeks, he really started,” Berens said. “Fortunately, um, God is a Packers fan, so it’s going to take a certain amount of time, like God will give the Bears some wins, but the Packers are going to come out on top.””You need the Pope to be a Bears fan… fortunately God is a Packers fan” 🤣@CharlieBerens is calling the Packers going all the way to the Super Bowl 🏆#GoPackGopic.twitter.com/PJYYgadTfP— Good Morning Football (@gmfb) December 1, 2025Pope Leo XIV, who made history in May as the first American pope, is from Chicago and is a White Sox fan, as confirmed by his brother, John Prevost. Whether he is a Bears fan is more of a mystery, but there are a couple of hints (and a whole lot of memes and T-shirts).More: Tickets for Packers, Bears games most expensive of the 2025 seasonWhen Vice President JD Vance met him in May, he presented him with a custom Bears jersey with his name on it, to which the new pontiff replied, “Good choice.” In July, a family from Chicago vacationing in Italy was able to hand him a “Da Pope” T-shirt, as a nod to “Da Bears,” after Sunday Mass. The moment of him holding it up and smiling was shared on his Instagram and went viral.Berens’ appearance on the sports talk show also promoted his new comedy special, “Neighborly,” which premiered Dec. 1 on his YouTube channel. The one-hour show was filmed in February at Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton. It covers everything from registries fatigue to his Grandma Sue and late Grandpa Bob to being Midwest cheap. It ends with the signature closer from the “Manitowoc Minute” video segments that launched his career: “And as always, go Packers and (bleep) the Bears.”Kendra Meinert is an entertainment and feature writer at the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
