After Penn State made headlines by poaching Iowa State’s Matt Campbell on Dec. 5 to conclude its 54-day head coaching search, the Cyclones almost immediately responded by signing Washington State’s Jimmy Rogers as Campbell’s replacement, prompting fans across the nation to showcase a variety of reactions to the news out of Ames.Campbell, who leaves Iowa State as the program’s winningest coach with 72 victories across his 10 seasons, signed in principle to an 8-year deal with the Nittany Lions, with compensation details not yet confirmed due to approval required by the Penn State Board of Trustees. Barring a wildly unexpected denial by the Board of Trustees, Campbell is expected to be formally introduced as Penn State’s 17th all-time head coach on Monday, Dec. 9.Regarding the Cyclones’ hiring of Jimmy Rogers to a six-year deal, the 36-year-old has already carved out an illustrious track record despite leading the rebuilding Cougars to a 6-6 record this season. That success was achieved at the FCS level, where Rogers compiled a 27-3 record as head coach of the Jackrabbits from 2023-24 and won back-to-back national titles (2022 and 2023) with South Dakota State during his 12-year tenure. As a result of Rogers’ departure from Pullman, he is now required to pay Washington State $4 million under his contract-stipulated buyout.Matt Campbell has told Cyclone players and coaches he’s taking the Penn State job.Jimmy Rogers is Iowa State’s new Head Coach.
