The regular season is over and the final weekend was nothing short of shocking. A New Mexico double overtime win over San Diego State and a come from behind win by Boise State over Utah State resulted in four fan bases waiting to see who would face off for the Mountain West title. In a surprising turn of events, we will be getting a UNLV-Boise State championship game for the third consecutive season. Before we dive into the championship game, let’s take a look at the games that got us there in this edition of “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly.”The GoodBoise StateIt wasn’t always pretty and the deck was sure stacked against the Broncos, but they showed a ton of heart in their come-from-behind victory over Utah State. Backup quarterback Max Cutforth had his best performance since taking over for injured starter Maddux Madsen, throwing for 341 yards. Dylan Riley added 120 yards on the ground to go over 1,000 yards on the season. It was also a solid performance by the defense that had to overcome some questionable calls that could have put the Broncos in control of the game. The Broncos now have the opportunity to host the championship game and leave the Mountain West with three consecutive championships. Air ForceIt wasn’t the season the Falcons were hoping for with only four wins and losses to both Army and Navy. But at least they were able to secure a win over their biggest conference rival in Colorado State. The Falcons made a change at quarterback with Josh Johnson getting the start, and it seemed to get this offense back on track. I have no idea how the Falcons will do in this modern era of college football, or if Troy Calhoun is still the right guy for the job. Only time will tell.New MexicoIf any team has a reason to be upset about the tiebreaker process, it’s the Lobos. After defeating the Aztecs 23-17 in double overtime, they secured their second win over a top four team. Jason Eck is exactly the type of leader this program needed to transform this program. The Lobos just had one of their best seasons in program history and should get a decent bowl match-up. I would be very surprised if this team isn’t playing for a conference championship next fall.UNLVTen wins and a third consecutive appearance in the Mountain West Championship game. Rebel fans should be feeling good, especially after a dominating win over their biggest rival. Now, for the fifth time in three seasons, the Rebels will have a chance to take the throne from Boise State. This is the biggest game in the history of this program. They have an outside chance of making the College Football Playoff and need this win to feel good about the trajectory of their program and their decision to stay in the Mountain West.Fresno StateMatt Entz has brought a new culture to Fresno State and this program is definitely headed in the right direction under his leadership. The Bulldogs won their eighth game of the season in dominating fashion over in-state rival San Jose State. Fresno State has a young roster and should have one of the top defenses in the PAC 12. It will be interesting to see where this program goes at the quarterback position with EJ Warner leaving. Regardless of who they get, Bulldog fans should feel good about what the future holds.HawaiiWhat a season by Timmy Chang and the Rainbow Warriors. Hawaii secured it’s eighth win of the season in dominating fashion by defeating Wyoming 27-7. This program has to feel good about it’s future, especially if they can hold on to stand out performers like Micah Alejado and Jackson Harris. This year was likely do or die for Timmy Chang, and his staff likely secured a long future on the islands.The BadUtah StateThe Aggies had every chance to win their game against Boise State. They had a 21-10 halftime lead and even dodged a few bullets where questionable penalties took away Boise State interceptions. This game ultimately came down to the Aggies’ inability to convert two short fourth downs that would have likely resulted in an Aggie victory. But this program is trending up and the Aggies should feel good about where they are headed in the future.San Diego StateA resurgent season ends in disappointment. The Aztecs were sitting pretty just a few weeks ago and looked like a lock to play for the conference championship. Instead, they ended up in a nightmare scenario where the computer sealed their fate. The Aztecs had every opportunity to defeat New Mexico and host the conference championship. Instead, they will be watching Friday night’s championship game at home. This program is trending in the right direction, but they will need to get much better on the offensive side of the ball if they want to contend in the PAC 12.The UglyColorado StateThe Rams were a huge letdown this fall. After an improved 2024 season, this looked like a team that was poised to compete for a conference championship. Instead, their head coach was fired and they finished with the worst record in the conference. It will be interesting to see if a veteran coach like Jim Mora can bring about the philosophical change that this program needs to be successful. Their showing against Air Force was a reflection of an entire season that was filled with chaos and disappointment.NevadaI expected more from Jeff Choate and his Wolf Pack team after winning two consecutive conference games. The Wolf Pack finished the season at home against in-state rival UNLV in a battle for the Fremont Cannon. The defense looked lost against a good UNLV team, and the offense was effective in moving the ball until they got into opponent territory. But penalties and negative plays prevented this game from being competitive. It’s hard to see how this program moves forward in the modern era of college football. One thing is certain; their in-state rival is leaving them in the dust.San Jose StateIf the Rams were the biggest disappointment in the Mountain West, the Spartans were not far behind. This was a team that entered the season with championship aspirations but only managed three wins. The team has a lot to work on this off-season, and figuring out their defense will be the top priority. The Spartans gave up 55 points to Nevada two weeks ago and 41 to Fresno State this past weekend. Neither of those teams are known for having great offenses. One thing is certain; this team will likely look much different next fall.WyomingThe Cowboys are a mess and massive changes need to happen this off-season if there is any hope of getting this program back on track. The offense was completely inept for the majority of the season; this was the sixth time this year that Wyoming scored 10 points or less. I was skeptical of the Jay Sawvel hire in the first place. I think this program needs a philosophical change from the Craig Bohl era, and that’s not going to happen under Sawvel’s leadership. Their performance on the islands was embarrassing.
