Both of the USC Trojans’ college basketball teams are off to hot starts, and the newcomers have taken on the lead role as the stars. Both Chad Baker-Marza and Jazzy Davidson have taken little time to get adjusted to their new squads and have been lights-out since the start of the season. For former Trojans in the NBA, it has been a struggle for Evan Mobley and his Cleveland Cavaliers to take back control of the East. Another former big man, Onyeka Okongwu, has outplayed his previous role as the backup big and now is the lead big on a frisky Atlanta Hawks team this season.Here are my top performers across all hoops this past week for USC, both in college and the NBA:Men’s Basketball – Chad Baker-MazaraThe Trojans suffered their first loss of the season, and at the end of a former Trojan, Desmond Claude. Claude, of course, managed to have the best game of the season. Losing Claude is tough, but it appears the Trojans have struck gold with Chad Baker-Mazara. Baker-Mazara transfer from Auburn has been as advertised this season. That was especially true this past week, as in the last two games he posted up leading scoring production, with 25 and 21 point games. He was brought in to take on the role as the lead scorer and improve three-point shooting; he has checked both boxes so far. He is averaging 20.9 points on the season and shooting 45% from the field and 36% from three. Chad Baker-Mazara is a big reason for the Trojans’ hot start, and he had a great week this past week. Women’s Basketball – Jazzy DavidsonNo Juju Watkins anymore for the Women’s Trojans, but it doesn’t seem to matter as former number one recruit Jazzy Davidson has taken on the role as the star. Davidson has met all the high expectations so far in 9 games and has led the Trojans to a 7-2 start. Davidson is averaging 16.7 points per contest to start the season. Davidson, in the Lady Trojans’ two games last week, was elite. Against the Huskies, Davidson led the Trojans to victory with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. The performance prior to that, Davidson chipped a stat sheet stuffing performance with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 blocks. This team will go as far as their leader, Davidson, can take them, and with a week like this, watch out for the lady Trojans. NBA – Evan MobleyIt has been a poor start to the season for the Cleveland Cavaliers, as they sit as the number eight team in the Eastern Conference, just a year removed from having one of the best regular-season records in the NBA. Darius Garland has been banged up this season, and unfortunately, former Evan Mobley really has not taken that next step to being the #2 option. Donovan Mitchell has been lighting up, but he needs help. However, this past week in 4 games, Mobley has played well. He has had 10 rebounds in 3 of the 4 games. He has averaged 18.9 points per game in the last 4 as well. When Mobley goes out there and dominates the glass and is an aggressive scorer, this Cavs team is hard to stop. For the Cavs to make up some ground, Mobley will need to play like he has recently and heck even take it up a notch further. NBA – Onyeka OkongwuKristaps Porziņģis was brought in to Atlanta to be another star alongside Trae Young this season. Per usual, Porziņģis has dealt with injuries and has missed time this season. Former USC Trojan and backup big man Onyeka Okongwu has stepped up big time and given great production to the Hawks in relief of Porziņģis. Porziņģis, when he does play, still manages to be effective, and he averages 19.2 points per contest in 13 games. Onyeka Okongwu has been reliable and shown massive improvement this season behind the arc. In 24 games, Onyeka Okongwu has averaged 16 points per contest. In the last 4 games, this past week, Okongwu had two 20-point performances. The last performance he posted an impressive stat line of 21 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. At times, Okongwu has massively outplayed Porziņģis this season, and that point proved to be true this past week. Women’s Basketball – Kennedy SmithKennedy Smith takes on the toughest defensive assignments and is asked to do everything for USC. Her defense has been elite so far this season, helping USC win tough games such as Sunday night’s 59-50 street fight against Washington.
