Keys for the Vikings’ offense vs the Commanders’ defense in Week 14

It’s been a brutal four-game stretch for the Minnesota Vikings’ offense. Quarterbacks have combined to throw for two touchdowns and 10 interceptions. They haven’t scored a point since the second quarter of their 23-6 loss to the Packers. And they haven’t scored a touchdown in three weeks, when J.J. McCarthy found Jordan Addison for a go-ahead score against the Bears on November 16.McCarthy and O’Connell are hoping that focusing less on fundamentals and more on the task at hand will help the second-year quarterback play with a “clear mind”. Instead, they will look to refine McCarthy’s mechanics in the offseason. He even admitted to being an overthinker and that striving for perfection is affecting his in-game play.If there were ever a “get-right” game for McCarthy and the offense, this would be the game. The Washington Commanders have the 31st-ranked defense and allow 6.3 yards per play, tied for the league’s worst mark. No one allows more EPA per pass play (+0.18) than Washington, either. Here are the keys for the Vikings’ offense this Sunday against the Commanders.Keys for the Vikings’ offense vs the Commanders’ defense in Week 14Get Justin Jefferson involvedThis has been the most frustrating season of Justin Jefferson’s career. He entered Week 14 with 799 receiving yards, which ranks 12th in the league. But he has gone seven straight games without reaching 100 yards and hasn’t scored a touchdown in five games.Last week was the least productive of his career. Jefferson didn’t catch a pass until the end of the third quarter, losing four yards on a screen pass. He finished the game with only two receptions for a career-low four yards. The Vikings can’t operate their offense without Jefferson being the centerpiece.Don’t force McCarthy to think so muchIt’s been a disappointing first season for McCarthy, who is set to make only his seventh career start on Sunday. His 54.1% completion percentage is the lowest among qualified quarterbacks, and his 57.9 career passer rating is the lowest among first-round quarterbacks drafted since 2000 (Josh Rosen, 61.1).With O’Connell looking to simplify things, let’s hope that helps McCarthy play faster and with more conviction. It has looked like he’s been overthinking every aspect of his throwing motion the past month. If he can go out and focus on what his job is, hopefully, he can show improvement not only on Sunday but also the rest of the season.Don’t turn the ball overThis is a plea. The Vikings have turned the ball over 13 times during their four-game losing streak and have a league-high 26 turnovers this season. That has the Vikings with a paltry minus-15 turnover differential.Fortunately for Minnesota, the Commanders haven’t been effective at taking the ball away this year. They have seven takeaways, tied for the second-fewest in the league. The Vikings are 3-1 when they have one or fewer turnovers. This article originally appeared on Vikings Wire: Keys for the Vikings’ offense vs the Commanders’ defense in Week 14
