Michigan shuts out Michigan State 3-0 in season opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The fireworks started early between heated rivals Michigan State and Michigan, but it would be the Wolverines who would earn the 3-0 shutout over the Spartans.Michigan State football coach Pat Fitzgerald dropped the ceremonial puck in which MSU captain Matt Basgall and Michigan Captain T.J. Hughes met on the ice.Five minutes into the game, Michigan’s Malcolm Spence scored his seventh goal of the season, getting the Wolverines off to an early start.Michigan State goal Trey Augustine made some huge saves in the 2nd period and came up with 24 saves on the night.In the 3rd period, Michigan’s Aidan Park slipped through the the defense finding open space and scored a goal to put Michigan in full control.Later in the period off the power play, TJ Hughes found Jayden Perron as he sends a shot from the point to round out the scoring for the Wolverines.Michigan State hockey coach Adam Nightingale thought his team got off to a good start but a few penalties hurt their momentum. The Spartans had 23 shots on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net.“Our job as coaches is, it’s easy to fly off the handle and point fingers and we have to do a better job of making sure we’re doing the right things,” said Michigan State hockey coach Adam Nightingale. “This group is a group we’ve really enjoyed coaching here and it’s important to finish strong here before break,” he continued.The series now shifts to Ann Arbor for game two of the series in which the Spartans and Wolverines will face each other on Saturday at Yost Ice Arena.Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
