NFL fines two Tampa Bay Bucs over ‘violent gesture’ against Arizona

The NFL was handing out its usual weekly fines recently, and Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, along with running back Bucky Irving, had their wallets lightened up a bit for a “violent gesture” against the Arizona Cardinals. On Saturday, a day before the Buccaneers will take on the New Orleans Saints in a divisional battle, Mayfield was fined $14,191 for the unsportsmanlike conduct call against the Cardinals with 4:01 left in the third quarter on Sunday. Bucky Irving was also involved in the viral “nose swipe” or “you stink” celebration. The gesture itself has been under scrutiny in the NFL and college football for being presented as unsportsmanlike.Bucky Irving was only fined $6,349, as it’s based on a player’s contract percentage, and Irving’s is significantly lower than Mayfield’s at the moment. In total, the NFL, otherwise known as the “No Fun League,” handed out 29 fines following Week 13. The NFL has been more lenient with Mayfield, especially after he criticized the referees following the game against the Detroit Lions, but they decided not to act upon his comments. This was Mayfield’s first fine of the season. The Buccaneers beat the Arizona Cardinals last week, ending a three-game losing skid, and now sit at (7-5) atop the NFC South Division with the Carolina Panthers hot on their heels.
