Retirement time? Leon Edwards finally breaks silence in bizarre statement after Prates loss

Leon Edwards’ UFC career is in rough shape.Less than 18 months ago, “Rocky” was riding a 13-fight unbeaten streak that saw him capture and defend the UFC Welterweight title. Then, he was upset by Belal Muhammad in a fairly flat performance that still saw him win two rounds. His attempt to rebound versus Sean Brady went disastrously, as the grappler dominated him for three full rounds before securing a guillotine choke late in the fight.Leading up to his UFC 322 matchup versus Carlos Prates last month, the word “retirement” was already following Edwards around. Edwards himself didn’t bring up the potential of walking away, but he did describe the Prates bout as “must-win.” Unfortunately, Prates delivered the first knockout loss of Edwards’ career early in round two, rallying with a monster left hand after a strong start from the former champion (watch here).Since then, Edwards has gone radio silent. The former champion broke that silence Thursday with a social media post, though it didn’t exactly offer much insight into his Prates loss or fighting future.“Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift,” Edwards wrote on both X and Instagram. For now, it appears the 34 year old isn’t ready to commit to anything, be it retirement or another fight. Likely, Edwards will take some time off after his first knockout loss, but there are still interesting matchups available for “Rocky” if he chooses to continue fighting. Will he choose to keep pushing when his championship prospects are now so grim? We’ll just have to wait and see.
