World Cup 2026: Five-time winner Brazil heading to Hard Rock Stadium

The most-decorated team in World Cup history. The original World Cup champion. A club with a huge rooting interest in South Florida. A team known for late dramatics. Those are some of the headline teams headed for Miami Gardens, now that the full match schedule for World Cup 2026 has been announced.Hard Rock Stadium was assigned seven matches, including four first-round affairs, a quarterfinal and the consolation match.More World Cup: US to face Paraguay, Australia in first two World Cup matchesMetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., will host the final on July 19.Teams headed for South Florida include World Cup legend Brazil, which will play Scotland on June 24. Uruguay’s national team will be a familiar sight with first-round matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde set in stone and a potential knockout-round meeting with Argentina in the cards (barring upsets, which are inevitable at any World Cup). Argentina is considering setting up a training base in South Florida. But it remains to be seen if Inter Miami star Lionel Messi will join the squad in a bid to successfully defend the title. “I think we got some great matches,” said Rodney Barreto, co-chair of South Florida’s Host Committee and a veteran organizer of Super Bowls in Miami. “I’m happy with that.”The June 27 match between Colombia and Portugal caught Barreto’s eye based on the large Colombia population in South Florida.“The Colombia match is going to be a great one,” Barreto said.Barreto said now that the schedule is set, teams will begin solidifying their training facilities.“Palm Beach County is going to have one,” he said, although details remain to be ironed out. Inter Miami’s training grounds in Fort Lauderdale, he said, also will be used.Barreto compared hosting the World Cup to hosting Super Bowls in that he expects many to come even if they don’t have tickets. For those fans, the host committee is planning an array of attractions and activities, just as has become customary at Super Bowls.“Miami is going to do well because of Miami, know what I mean?” Barreto said. “We’re an international city. Everybody wants to be here. We’re the most exciting city.”The World Cup will highlight a flurry of events in Miami Gardens for the calendar year, including college football’s title game, the Miami Open tennis tournament and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. Unlike the other events, the World Cup will fall in the middle of summer, with many kickoff times set on or after sunset, to give fans and players some relief.“It’ll be a good shot in the arm for Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County,” Barreto said. “June and July of 2026, it’s usually our slow season. It’ll help the hotels, airports and restaurants.”Ticket information can be found on FIFA’s site.
