The 2025 4 Nations Face-Off continues tonight with a heavyweight showdown for the championship between Canada and the United States at TD Garden in Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET but expect some delay.
Team Canada
Canada enters the game with an explosive roster featuring superstars Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Sidney Crosby, all three players have shown why they are the best in the world at this tournament. On the blue line the Avalanche due, Cale Makar and Devon Toews will lead the way, while Jordan Binnington has been confirmed as the starting goaltender once again getting the nod over Adin Hill for tonight’s final game.
Team USA
The Americans counter with solid depth and a high-energy lineup led by Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, and Matthew Tkachuk. On defense the U.S. has tweaked a few things, but Jaccob Slavin and Brock Faber are providing a strong two-way presence, they take over the top line tonight. Between the pipes, Connor Hellebuyck has been named the starter. Hellebuyck has been the best player for the Americans so far this tournament, he is the backbone of this squad.
Players to Watch
Connor McDavid (Canada): The Oilers superstar continues to dominate with 71 points (22 goals, 49 assists) this season, making him the most dynamic offensive threat in the tournament. In the round robin he opened up the scoring vs the U.S. with a breakaway backhand goal.
Cale Makar (Canada): The Norris Trophy winner leads all NHL defensemen this season with 63 points (22 goals, 41 assists), showcasing his elite skating and playmaking. He is especially interesting to watch tonight because he did not suit up last game vs the U.S. due to illness.
Auston Matthews (USA): The Toronto Maple Leafs star center is having another dominant season (20 goals and 25 assists in only 40 games), making him one of the top goal scoring threats in this matchup. He is projected to play on the top line tonight with Jack Hughes and Jake Guentzel.
Jaccob Slavin (USA): The Hurricanes defenseman leads all American players in average time on ice per game at the tournament averaging 21:31 minutes a game. He’s been incredible defensively and will look to excel on both ends of the ice in this matchup tonight.
By the Numbers
A look at how the rosters compare in career NHL regular-season stats:

Assists: Canada (7,389), USA (6,243)
Points: Canada (11,491), USA (10,111)

Key Matchup
This game features two of the deepest rosters in the tournament, setting up a battle of elite offensive firepower.
Canada’s Speed & Skill: Led by McDavid and MacKinnon, Canada thrives on speed, transition play, and creativity. They generate scoring chances at an elite level, with Makar’s mobility from the back end adding another layer to their attack. An open approach will give Canada the upper hand but they seem to struggle against structured pressure. Backchecking to get back into the play defensively will be important tonight, guys need to be skating a two way game with a championship on the line.
USA’s Physicality & Depth: The Americans will look to counter Canada’s speed with an aggressive forecheck and heavy play along the boards. The Tkachuk brothers will be key in setting the physical tone once again, do we see another fight off the opening faceoff tonight? possibly? While the physicality is important, guys like Matt Bouldy and Dylan Larkin provide the finesse through depth.
Goaltending Duel: Both teams feature world-class netminders. Jordan Binnington has proven himself in pressure moments, but he’ll need to be sharp against the lethal American attack tonight and avoid the collapse we saw vs Finland on monday. Connor Hellebuyck on the other hand is fresh off another Vezina-caliber season, and has the ability to steal games with his elite positioning and reflexes. Currently on all sportsbooks he is the leading candidate for MVP.
Faceoff Battle: Winning draws will be critical, particularly on special teams. Connor McDavid is carrying the top line of Canada with a 66.7% faceoff win rate and Nathan MacKinnon takes charge of the 2nd line with a 56.3% this tournament giving Canada a strong presence at the dot. For the U.S., Auston Matthews is rocking a 62.9% while their other star center Jack Eichel contains a 56% faceoff win percentage providing a solid counter, making every faceoff a key moment in the game no matter how little it seems..
Special Teams Factor
Canada’s power play, stacked with elite playmakers, will be a major test for the U.S. penalty kill but Hellebuyck has stayed solid all tournament. On the flip side, if Team USA can draw penalties and set up Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk on the power play, Canada’s PK unit will have its hands full especially with Binnington struggling throughout the round robin stage.
Closing Thoughts
This game is A MUST WATCH battle between two of the tournament’s biggest favorites. Both teams bring elite superstar talent, deep rosters, and high end goaltending, making for a true clash of hockey titans that will surely go down in the history books. The result could have major effects on the upcoming rosters for the 2026 Winter Olympics, adding even more intensity to an already heated North American rivalry that dates back to the start of hockey.
Expect a fast-paced, physical game in front of a raucous Boston crowd as these two powerhouse nations go head to head to determine the champion.
