New Year’s Resolutions for Every NHL Team in 2025

As we begin 2025, each NHL team has its own challenges and aspirations for the remainder of the season and beyond. Here’s a “new year’s resolution” for every team to focus on as they chase their goals into the new year.

Atlantic Division

  1. Boston Bruins: Prepare for sustained success.
After a historic regular season in 2023 and roster changes in the off season, the Bruins should focus on developing younger players in their system while maximizing contributions from veterans to stay competitive.
  2. Buffalo Sabres: End the playoff drought.
The Sabres haven’t made the playoffs since 2011. With a strong core led by Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin, the goal should be to secure that elusive postseason spot.
  3. Detroit Red Wings: Stay patient with the rebuild.
The Red Wings rebuild is progressing, yes it’s slow but patience and proper development of prospects like Simon Edvinsson and Axel Sandin Pellika are key to long term success moving forward.
  4. Florida Panthers: Re-establish defensive dominance.
After a magical run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2023, the Panthers need to strengthen their blue line to compete in a tough Atlantic Division for the remainder of 2025. They will be looking to extend their cup contending window for a few more years.
  5. Montreal Canadiens: Develop a balanced roster.
With young offensive stars like Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, the Canadiens should prioritize building a stronger defense and finding a reliable system to thrive on for the future would be ideal for head coach Martin St. Louis.
  6. Ottawa Senators: Find consistency.
Ottawa has plenty of talent in Tim Stützle and Brady Tkachuk, but their resolution should be improving consistency and turning potential into tangible results on the ice. Playoffs are within reach, they just need to execute.
  7. Tampa Bay Lightning: Restock the cupboard.
With an aging core, Tampa’s resolution should focus on restocking their prospect pipeline while managing the workload of their star players. Victor Hedman, Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy continue to lead this Tampa team forward.
  8. Toronto Maple Leafs: Break through in the playoffs.
After finally advancing in 2024 after what feels like forever, Toronto must find a way to go deeper in the playoffs and turn their regular season success into a true Stanley Cup run. Their fans have waited long enough with a core full of superstars, time for them to shine.

Metropolitan Division

  1. Carolina Hurricanes: Play Winning Hockey.
The Hurricanes are perennial contenders again this year and their new year’s resolution should be to turn their stacked roster into a Stanley Cup victory and bring the cup back the Raleigh North Carolina for the 2nd time in team history. This trade deadline the Hurricanes should look for a goalie to solidify the flaws in their starting lineup.
  2. Columbus Blue Jackets: Unlock the team’s potential.
The Blue Jackets have a young core, including Adam Fantilli and a revitalized roster, but they haven’t yet reached their full potential. Their resolution should focus on fostering chemistry, improving consistency, and developing a winning identity under head coach Dean Evason to become a playoff contender.
  3. New Jersey Devils: Fortify defensive depth.
The Devils have one of the league’s best offenses, but their resolution should be to solidify their defensive corps for sustained success. Keeping this flow and rhythm going into 2025 will be essential to continued success.
  4. New York Islanders: Boost offensive firepower.
The Islanders defensive structure is strong at times, but their new year’s resolution should be finding consistent scoring to complement Mathew Barzal.
  5. New York Rangers: Take the next step.
With Igor Shesterkin and a deep roster, the Rangers need to figure out how to become consistent contenders and push for a deep playoff run. Retooling the roster and making changes at the trade deadline will be important in 2025.
  6. Philadelphia Flyers: Stay committed to the rebuild.
The Flyers are in a rebuilding phase and should be patient as they develop young talent and build for the future. Russian rookie Matvei Michkov is showing signs of being a cornerstone piece in the Flyers future.
  7. Pittsburgh Penguins: Maximize the Crosby and Malkin era.
With Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin still performing, the Penguins need to push for some of the last potential playoff runs before a rebuild looms. Pushing in the chips might not be ideal for the long term but it’s rare to have special players like these playing so well for so long!
  8. Washington Capitals: Support Ovechkin’s goal chase.
With Alex Ovechkin chasing Wayne Gretzky’s all time goal record, the Capitals should focus on supporting their captain while transitioning for the future. Making the playoffs is the main goal but these two goals seem to go hand in hand.

Central Division

  1. Utah Hockey Club: Continue building excitement.
With Clayton Keller and Dylan Guenther leading the charge, the Utah team should focus on improving their on ice product and building enthusiasm for their new arena. Making the playoff would be ideal but the focus is more on the future for Utah.
  2. Chicago Blackhawks: Develop Bedard’s supporting cast.
Connor Bedard is a generational talent, but Chicago’s new year’s resolution should be developing young players to surround him with a competitive team moving into the new year. Selling high and buying low near the deadline could shape up a great roster for the 2025-26 campaign.
  3. Colorado Avalanche: Stay healthy and stay competitive.
Injuries derailed Colorado’s chances in recent years and to start the season. Their resolution is to keep their stars, like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, healthy for another Cup push. The supporting cast in Colorado has been good when everyone is in the lineup. New goaltender duo Wedgewood and Blackwood have been solid since being acquired, rallying around them in 2025 will be vital to their success.
  4. Dallas Stars: Finish the job. Win the Cup.
With a deep, talented roster, the Stars should take the next step and contend for the Stanley Cup this year. The new year’s resolution will be to make the Stanley Cup Finals. Anything less than a deep playoff run would feel like an underperformance from this group, who has been sniffing at a championship for quite some time now.
  5. Minnesota Wild: Break through in the playoffs.
The Wild have been a solid regular season team but have struggled to make a deep playoff run. Their 2025 new year’s resolution should be to find ways to elevate their game in the postseason, whether through offensive creativity, lineup adjustments, or addressing key depth concerns.
  6. Nashville Predators: Accelerate the retool.
Nashville’s should be blending the veteran leadership with emerging young stars. Finding any kind of life will be important to start out the new year as they sit pretty far back from a playoff position when this team was highly touted as having “the best off season” in the NHL.
  7. St. Louis Blues: Find a new identity.
With a new head coach and some new faces in the locker room, the Blues need to re-establish the competitive identity that led them to the Stanley Cup in 2019. Goaltending has been up and down but scoring has been relatively consistent from the players they expect to produce.
  8. Winnipeg Jets: Elevate offensive consistency.
The Jets have plenty of firepower with players like Kyle Connor and Nikolaj Ehlers, but their offense can be streaky. Their resolution should be to focus on creating a more consistent attack and power play, supported by improved puck movement and contributions from their depth players, to stay competitive in a tough division.

Pacific Division

  1. Anaheim Ducks: Build around the new ear of Ducks.
The Ducks young core is promising, but their resolution should focus on finding a trade for Trevor Zegras while focusing on the development of players like Pavel Mintyukov, Leo Carlsson and Olen Zellweger into franchise cornerstones.
  2. Calgary Flames: Clarify the direction.
Calgary must decide whether to rebuild, retool or go for it as they look to establish a clearer path forward. They’ve found success this season but there are still cracks in their armor that should be addressed sooner than later.
  3. Edmonton Oilers: Win a Cup with McDavid and Draisaitl.
With Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in their prime, the Oilers new year’s resolution should be to assemble a team capable of winning a championship. I assume they will be high buyers at the trade deadline in 2025.
  4. Los Angeles Kings: Take control of the division.
With a strong mix of veterans and young talent, the Kings should aim to dominate the Pacific and solidify themselves as contenders in this year’s playoffs. The Kings are still without Drew Doughty but he will return to the lineup in the early part of 2025. Keep an eye out for this Kings team.
  5. San Jose Sharks: Commit to the rebuild.
San Jose’s resolution should be to fully embrace a rebuild, focusing on acquiring picks and developing prospects. Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith have been bright spots in a rebuild that looks to be kicked off with promise. The mix of veterans and young talent may be a perfect mesh to nurture the growth of this new group of young guns.
  6. Seattle Kraken: Strengthen the roster’s star power.
The Kraken have proven they can succeed with a balanced, team first approach, but to take the next step, they need a true game changer. Their new year’s resolution should be to acquire/develop a star player who can elevate their offense and make a difference in critical moments.
  7. Vancouver Canucks: Focus on defensive stability.
For the Canucks to take the next step, their resolution should be to prioritize strengthening their blue line and improving defensive play. By committing to a more structured system and better puck management, they can support Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen. The goal is to create a more balanced, competitive team. They have the tools to go far in the playoffs they just need to manage their assets better.
  8. Vegas Golden Knights: Maintain dominance through depth.
The Golden Knights thrive on a balanced roster and strong team chemistry. Their new year’s resolution should be to continue developing their depth players and ensuring their lineup remains competitive and adaptable, no matter what challenges they face. Vegas will be another strong contender for the cup this season with 4 sets of balanced forwards, 3 pairs of strong blue liners backed up Adin Hill in net.

My Final Thoughts
Every NHL team has unique challenges and aspirations for 2025. Whether it’s chasing the Stanley Cup, trading for new assets or developing young talent to rebuild for the future, the new year offers a fresh start to focus on what matters most. HOCKEY!
