San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Prediction and Picks – October 10, 2024

Week 6 of the NFL season kicks off Thursday night with an NFC West showdown in Seattle, as the Seahawks host the defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco, currently sitting at 2-3, will be without 2023 Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey due to injury. The 49ers suffered another division loss last week, falling to the Arizona Cardinals 24-23. Meanwhile, the Seahawks are 3-2 and still leading the NFC West despite their disappointing 29-20 loss to the New York Giants at home last week. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 pm EST.

San Francisco’s Inconsistency Raises Concerns
The 49ers, once a dominant force in the NFC, have struggled with consistency this season, losing two of their last three games to teams with losing records. Two weeks ago, they squandered a lead against the Rams, losing 28-24. Although they managed to bounce back with a win over New England, they suffered a shocking defeat at home last week against the Cardinals, blowing a 13-point halftime lead and eventually losing 24-23.

As All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner noted, “We kind of melted down in the second half. Too much leaky yardage, missed tackles, not fitting it right.” Warner’s words highlight the defensive lapses that have plagued San Francisco. Offensively, the 49ers managed only one touchdown drive, with their second score coming from a blocked punt. Quarterback Brock Purdy finished the game with 229 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.

Heading into this matchup, the 49ers will be seeking their first division win of the season. Statistically, they rank 2nd in total offense and 12th in rushing, even without McCaffrey, while boasting the league’s top-ranked passing attack. However, red-zone inefficiency continues to be a problem, with the 49ers converting only 29th of their red-zone opportunities into touchdowns.

Defensively, San Francisco ranks 10th in total defense but has struggled against both the run (21st) and the pass (23rd). Their red-zone defense remains a bright spot, ranking 10th in the league. The 49ers also lead the NFL in time of possession and rank 8th in sacks per game, but injuries to key players like Fred Warner and Charvarius Ward could be a factor in this game.

Seattle Struggles to Maintain Momentum
The Seahawks started the season strong, going 3-0, but they’ve hit a rough patch, losing their last two games. After a 42-29 loss to the Lions, they followed it up with a disappointing 29-20 defeat against the Giants. Tied at halftime, Seattle couldn’t keep up in the second half. The game ended with a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown, sealing their fate.

Quarterback Geno Smith put up decent numbers, throwing for 284 yards and rushing for 72, but was sacked seven times. Seattle’s offense produced 333 yards but was forced to abandon the running game early due to playing from behind. Their defense, however, was a bigger concern, allowing 420 total yards to a Giants team missing key offensive players. Seattle’s defense also struggled on third downs, allowing New York to convert 7-of-16 attempts.

Seattle comes into this divisional clash ranked 7th in total offense, 7th in rushing, and 15th in passing. In the red zone, they’ve been effective, ranking 10th in the NFL in converting red zone opportunities into touchdowns. Defensively, they are 11th overall, but issues remain with penalties (24th) and turnovers (25th), both of which could be costly against a 49ers team with experience and discipline.

Prediction and Pick
The Seahawks have faced back-to-back losses, and their defense has shown vulnerabilities against a variety of offenses. On the other side, the 49ers are looking to bounce back after an unexpected home loss to the Cardinals and are winless in divisional play this season.

San Francisco’s offense, led by Brock Purdy, should be able to capitalize on Seattle’s defensive struggles. Purdy is 4-0 in his career against the Seahawks, boasting a QB rating of 109.2 in those matchups. Expect the 49ers to rely on their ground game early, which could open up opportunities for Purdy to exploit Seattle’s secondary. Meanwhile, Seattle’s ongoing issues with penalties and turnovers could be too much to overcome against a 49ers team eager to get back on track.

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -3.5
