While Jalen Brunson scored a game-high 33 points and OG Anunoby returned from injury, it was Miles McBride who shined in the Knicks’ dominant 34-point victory over the Utah Jazz on Friday night. The 25-year-old came off the bench and made seven three-pointers, including five in the first half, to finish with 22 points. Over the past six games, McBride has made 27 out of his last 42 three-point attempts, giving New York a huge boost in scoring. And it wasn’t just his offense that helped lead the Knicks to their 12th home victory of the season, as his defensive efforts have become significant for Mike Brown’s squad.”Our defensive player of the game was Deuce,” Brown said. “Deuce has done a lot the past few days defensively. The one thing that he’s been phenomenal at is in pick and roll situations, just one-twoing into the ball and warring over that screen with the ball. Having that type of impact at the point of our defense has been great. “He earned it tonight. Not just based on tonight, but the last few games too.”However, with Anunoby back in the starting lineup, Brown was tasked with deciding between Josh Hart and McBride for the fifth spot. He said the plan was to go with Hart, but getting McBride the amount of minutes he “deserves” was a challenge, especially with the blowout score on Friday night (he only played 22 minutes).”I was going to start Josh. The thing that was probably the hardest was trying to figure out, because Deuce has played well, but just trying to get Deuce on the floor without playing him like a 20-minute or 17-minute run. Trying to break it up to where, at the end of the day, and obviously with the score what it was, he didn’t really hit it where I wanted him at the end of the day.”He deserves to play 25, 26 minutes coming off the bench, if not more. So, trying to find time for him so we can keep him on the floor was my biggest struggle.”Even with the recent shooting success, the guard is simply trying to help New York stack wins.”Y’all are telling me. I don’t pay attention to the numbers, I have no clue,” McBride said about his shooting stats. “I just wanna do whatever I can do to help the team win, trusting God in the process.”He added: “Y’all are telling me the numbers. I’m just out there. My teammates are doing a great job of finding me. Feels natural.”When asked about Brown’s comments regarding the starting lineup, McBride doesn’t seem to care if he starts or comes off the bench as long as he’s making an impact. The West Virginia product even noted he’s more proud of being Brown’s “defensive player of the game” over his three-point shooting performance. “I really try to make it as minimal as I can. Bring energy, bring a toughness to the game. Obviously, my shot-making ability. The main thing I just want to impact the game, impact winning any way I can.”McBride and the Knicks will look to keep it going and extend their impressive home record (12-1, best since 1992-1993) on Sunday against the Orlando Magic.
