Wolves erupt in second half to sink Stratford

VANOSS — After a first-half fireworks show that featured the ejection of Vanoss boys coach Jonathon Hurt, the Wolves dominated the second half in a 72-36 win over local rival Stratford Thursday night in the semifinals of the Pontotoc Conference Tournament.Vanoss stayed unbeaten at 5-0, while Stratford stumbled to 2-1.In another boys semifinal matchup, Asher pushed past Allen’s junior varsity squad 63-46. The Indians, ranked No. 4 in Class B-II, improved to 4-1 and will now face Vanoss at 5:40 p.m. tonight for the boys championship. Stratford will play the Allen JV at 3 p.m. in the third-place contest.BOYS SEMIFINALSVanoss 72, Stratford 36Hurt was ejected after back-to-back technical fouls at the 2:50 mark of the first quarter, leaving assistant coach Scott Bradley to guide the Wolves the rest of the way.Stratford built a 20-13 first-quarter lead behind a strong showing at the free-throw line, sinking 12 of 15 attempts. Vanoss answered by outscoring the Bulldogs 13-6 in the second quarter to pull even at 26-26 by halftime.The Wolves then caught fire from long range. Vanoss buried six 3-pointers during a 27-1 run to open the second half, quickly putting the game out of reach.Dyllan Brown, held scoreless in the first quarter, erupted for a game-high 22 points, including two 3-pointers. Kanon Bradley scored all 14 of his points after intermission and knocked down four triples, three of them during Vanoss’ pivotal third-quarter surge.Noah Golish followed with 12 points and Karver Trentham also reached double figures with 10. Golish and Kingston Effinger each hit two 3-pointers.Oliver Smithwick paced Stratford with 18 points and was also assessed a first-quarter technical foul. He hit two 3-pointers and went an impressive 11 of 12 from the free-throw line.Greyson Wood added 15 points, and Cason Foster reached double digits with 10 — all in the first half — along with two 3-pointers. Hudson Skender chipped in eight points.Allen’s Landin Tenequer led all scorers with 20 points. He went 9 of 10 at the line and hit one 3-pointer. Gavin Hamilton and Gauge Lockhart scored eight points apiece. Lockhart sank two triples, and Hamilton was a perfect 4 of 4 on free throws.Asher finished 18 of 20 from the free-throw line. The Mustangs went 14 of 18.GIRLS CONSOLATIONStonewall 38, Konawa 37Stonewall senior Landree Dye hit the first of two free throws in the closing seconds to break a tie and lift the Lady Longhorns to a thrilling 38-37 win over Konawa.Stonewall, ranked No. 20 in Class B-1, improved to 4-2, while the Lady Tigers fell to 0-2.Konawa led 23-21 at halftime before Stonewall used a 12-6 third-quarter run to move ahead 33-29.Senior Cailey Hill tied the game at 37-37 with a jumper, setting up Dye’s late trip to the free-throw line.No Stonewall player reached double figures. Hill led the way with nine points, while Bonnie Gillis followed with eight to go along with seven rebounds and three steals. Dye scored seven, and Jaylee Grace hauled in 10 rebounds.Kassidy Lowden topped Konawa with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed nine rebounds. Bliss Henson added eight points and six rebounds.
