In the midst of a college football season, head coaches are often narrowly focused on simply who’s next on their team’s schedule. Oregon Ducks’ Dan Lanning is no different, meaning his focus now shifts to the No. 12-ranked James Madison Dukes, the Ducks’ first-round opponent in the CFP.But is it any different preparing for a Group of Six team that he rarely, if ever, sees as compared to a familiar Big Ten foe?According to Lanning, the process is the same.”Really no different than every other team that we prepare for,” he said on Sunday after the matchup was announced. “You’re usually so focused on the team that you’re currently playing that you’re not watching a lot of other college games throughout the season. So as the film gets uploaded on your system, you start breaking them down. You try to take an opportunity to go back and watch those, and that’s what we’ve already started today. So the process is really no different. Evaluate the film that you see, attack what you see, try to talk to some people who have maybe played common opponents, see what opinions they have on that team, and break it down just like a normal week.”What he’ll see on film with James Madison is a team that excels at the line of scrimmage, as the Dukes allow the second-lowest rushing yards to their opponents while running for the sixth-highest amount of yards themselves offensively.Quarterback Alonza Barnett III and running back Wayne Knight form one of the best backfield duos in the nation — regardless of their Group of Six label.
