The quest to keep Trinity Rodman in the NWSL: Commissioner Jessica Berman blocks proposed multi-million dollar contract from Washington Spirit

USWNT star Trinity Rodman is one of the most popular women’s soccer players in the United States, but she may be leaving the NWSL. Although Rodman and the Washington Spirit agreed on a proposed multi-million dollar contract, it was not approved by the league according to reporting by The Athletic.Rodman is currently a free agent, and has had competitive offers from European clubs. However, the league and the Washington Spirit’s ownership have said they want to do everything they can to keep Rodman in the league.“Our goal is to ensure that the very best players in the world, including Trinity, continue to call this league home. We will do everything we can, utilizing every lever available within our rules to keep Trinity Rodman here,” a league spokesperson said to The Athletic. The contract the Spirit proposed was a four year contract through 2029, with a higher salary in the final two years. The Athletic reported that the league rejected this deal because they believed it violated league rules. However, another source told The Athletic that the NWSL Player’s Association believes the contract does not violate the rules, and NWSLPA has raised a grievance with the league. The contract negotiations also come amidst a larger discussion about the NWSL salary cap and how it impacts the league. The cap is currently $3.5 million, but will increase to $4.9 million by 2029. Other top American players, like Naomi Girma and Alyssa Thompson, have also recently left the NWSL, raising questions about the league’s ability to retain its National Team stars under the current salary cap.The salary cap keeps parity between teams, but may limit the league’s ability to stay competitive with European leagues.Whether Rodman stays in the league or not will represent a turning point for the future of the NWSL.
